You never really want to be driving with expired tags. While you can’t be pulled over by police specifically for expired tags in Virginia, it can make being pulled over for something else more of a headache with more fines or even impoundment of your car.

If you get your tags renewed in Virginia a little bit after they expire, that’s fine, but you have to pay a $10 fine in addition to any registration or renewal fees. Again, police can’t pull you over for expired tags –unless the tags are four months past their expiration day.
