Hardwood Floors vs. Carpeting--The Pros and Cons
There are many important things to think about when you’re preparing to buy or build a home. One of these factors is the flooring throughout the home. So, to help shed some light on the subject for you, we’ve constructed this list of the pros and cons of both hardwood floors and carpeting.
Durability–With proper maintenance, your hardwood floors can literally last for centuries. Properly maintaining these floors can even increase your home’s market value over time, making them a worthy investment.
Variety of Styles–While there aren’t many creative designs to be discovered when it comes to carpeting, hardwood floors can come in a bevy of different styles and materials. This means that if you really want to express some creativity or personality within a room, looking into hardwood floors might be your best option.
Easy Maintenance–Cleaning hardwood floors is a simple task but you have to make sure you’re doing it consistently and correctly. Dusting and mopping hardwood floors are pretty self-explanatory. You may have to worry about apple juice or Pepsi soaking into a carpet after a spill but if it happens on a wooden floor, clean up will be much quicker and result in less damage to your home.
Hypoallergenic Properties Are a Plus–Unlike carpets, germs, dust and other things that can stir up sickness or allergies in the household won’t get caught on your wood floor if you’re properly maintaining them. This makes hardwood floors more friendly to those who have allergies or have young children in the house.
Costly–Due to all of the advantages of hardwood floors, it can be a very costly process. It comes with the territory of homeownership but it’s ultimately up to you whether or not you see value in paying the cost for this type of flooring.
Scratches = Refinishing–Some hardwood floors scratch easier than others. That being said, nasty scratches on your hardwood floor can sometimes lead to the necessity of a refinishing project.
Loud–Wooden floors can also lead to the amplification of simple things such as voices, footsteps, etc. Essentially, they could potentially make your house much noisier, depending on the kind of household and lifestyle you maintain.
Not Recommended For Rooms Prone To Moisture Exposure–Hardwood floors are great for homes but there are certain rooms that are not recommended to have hardwood floors installed in them. Rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens are susceptible to things such as spills and consistent moisture exposure. Moisture damage to wooden floors can cause some very costly damage to your once-beautiful floors.
Cheaper Purchase–Unlike options such as tile or wooden floors, carpeting a floor will cost much less. So, if you want the most immediate cost-effective option, you may want to look further into carpeted floors.
Comfortable–Hardwood floors may look nice but they are less comfortable than soft, properly maintained carpeting. If you need to sit, stand, or even lay on the ground for extended periods of time, then you’ll want to do that on the carpet as opposed to wooden floors.
Won’t Amplify Everyday Noise–Unlike wooden floors, carpeting won’t amplify everyday sounds such as footsteps, voices, or kids playing around the house. If you like a quieter home, carpeting might be the best option for your needs.
Traps Allergens–If you are prone to allergies then carpets, at least ones that aren’t properly maintained, are not your friend. They will trap allergens more easily than wooden floors.
Shorter Lifespan Than Wood Floors–Even if you properly maintain carpeting, it will still have a far shorter lifespan than a hardwood floor.
Poor at Combating Stains–Carpeting is much higher maintenance than wood floors when it comes to cleaning. That furry floor may look welcoming but if you spill something on the carpet, you’ll need to act fast and with the right products. Even then, it’s no guarantee that the stain and moisture will be completely removed.
