Motorcycle Insurance Illinois
Motorcyclists ride bikes for a variety of reasons. Some ride for sport, some want to be more environmentally conscious and others simply love the feeling. Motorcyclists take on a huge risk on the road, both safety wise and financially. According to the Insurance Information Institute, motorcyclists are more susceptible on the road and are more likely to be injured or killed compared to car passengers. Motorcycle accidents cost insurance providers billions of dollars every year.
In order to drive any motorcycle, Illinois requires a motorcycle license endorsement, Class M, on a driver’s license. A Class M endorsement allows a person to ride any motorcycle over 150cc. A Class L only allows riders to use motorcycles with less than 150cc displacement.
For extra practice, 12-month permits for Class L and M are granted for people 18 years of age and older. With a permit, riders can operate a motorcycle during daylight hours with a rider over the age of 21 who has at least 1 year of experience. Riders who are 16 to 17 years old may only apply for a 24-month permit for a Class L endorsement.
How To Get An Endorsement
In order to get Class M or L endorsements, you must pass written and driving skill tests given by the Secretary of State. However, if you take an IDOT-approved Motorcycle Safety Course, you are exempt from both tests with a valid completion card. Applicants also need to pass a vision test and pay a $10 fee.
You cannot prevent every accident but you can be prepared. After all, young riders are more likely to get into an accident while operating a motorcycle as opposed to driving a car. Just like auto insurance, motorcycle insurance provides coverage in case of an accident, loss, theft or other damages. Motorcycle insurance includes liability protection in case you are at fault for another person’s injuries or property damage.
Motorcycle insurance requirement laws vary by state. In the United States, 48 states require motorcyclists carry insurance policies. States that require coverage set a minimum amount of liability coverage that riders must have.
Like auto insurance, several factors affect motorcycle insurance rates. This includes, but is not limited to, how much coverage a person wants, additional endorsements and the deductible amount selected.
