Things to do in Calumet City

You know you’re in Calumet City when you see smiley faces on water towers. This is a border town in western Illinois just next to the Indiana town of Hammond. In fact, Calumet City’s old name was West Hammond before it was changed in 1924. Several people are passing through stops here for errands on an interstate road trip. In addition to a humble downtown area, there are several nature destinations in Calumet City, along with some community attractions. Here are a couple of things to do when you find yourself on the eastern tip of Illinois.

Calumet City Historical Society

See Calumet City’s track record from 1890 to the present with exhibits at the Calumet City Historical Society. They have clothing, buildings, and photographs from the turn of the 20th century along with reconstructions. They also have a 1936 log cabin which they use for community heritage events. The city hall itself is also a restored building. It’s a humble history for a humble city.

Green Lake Family Aquatic Center

A good seasonal community attraction of Calumet City is its small water park and accompanying park area. There’s a small winding, lazy river, water slides, and an aquatic jungle gym with a dumping bucket and water cannons. Families often spend hours here during the summer when the weather turns warm. Picnics are also allowed on the park grounds.
