SR-22 is not a type of insurance, rather a proof of insurance. An SR-22 certificate of financial responsibility guarantees you carry the minimum insurance required by the State of Illinois and that you will continue to carry it for a set amount of time.
An SR22 owner’s policy insures cars owned by the driver. The type of vehicle must be listed on the SR-22 or may be issued for all owned vehicles. The advantage of an owner’s policy is the ability to lend a car to other licensed drivers when you need to.
Per Illinois law, drivers that need an SR22 certificate must have the following minimum amounts in vehicle liability insurance:
- $25,000 for injury or death of one person in an accident
- $50,000 for injury or death of more than one person in an accident
- $20,000 for damages to property of another person
There most common reasons financial responsibility certificates are filed are:
- DUI/DWI convictions
- Driving uninsured
- Driving without a license
- A revoked or suspended license
