Drivers in Mexico may travel via the libre (free) road or the quota (toll) road. If travelers decide to travel to Mexico, the US Department of State recommends travelers use toll roads and avoid driving overnight. Road fatalities are far higher at night in Mexico than by day due to poor street lighting.

Mexico toll roads are safer and in better shape than free roads but can be expensive. In case you do have an accident or come across dangerous situations on the road, you can reach Mexico’s version of 911 at 066.

If you receive a traffic fines, these can be paid at the local police station.
