Hyundai and Kia recalled nearly 168,000 vehicles to fix a fuel pipe problem that may cause engine fires. This new recall comes from previous improper repairs during recalls for engine failures. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating both car manufacturers to determine if the first recall covered enough vehicles.
The NHTSA informs the public about car recalls. A majority of NHTSA employees are not working because of the government shut down. The last recall the NHTSA informed the public about on its website was on December 18.
The first set of Hyundai and Kia recalls began in 2015 when 1.7 million cars were recalled because manufacturing debris was blocking oil flow to rod bearings. Both Kia and Hyundai have admitted that the engine replacements may have not been done correctly by all of its dealers which has caused this second set of recalls. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported due to any of these recalls.
Kia announced it is only repairing 68,000 of the 618,000 vehicles that have been recalled for engine problems. Hyundai also announced that only cars whose engines were replaced in other recalls are eligible for repairs under this new recall.
