How To Obtain a Motorcycle Permit

how to get a motorcycle license

In order to lawfully operate a motorcycle in Illinois, you must have a class M or L license. The process to obtain a motorcycle license in Illinois is similar to the process for an auto license. Earning motorcycle license means a person must pay fees and pass exams in a permit period before a person can ride their motorcycle.

The minimum age to hold a motorcycle permit is 16 years old, with the permit for 16 and 17-year-old lasting for 24 months. Those who are 18 years and older will have permit’s that only last 12 months.

Age Requirements

The permit requirements are different for 16-17-year-olds and people 18 and older. For example, 16-17-year-olds must pass a driver safety course, rules of the road exam, and enroll in a motorcycle training course to earn a permit. On the other hand, those 18 and older need to present a valid ID, pass a vision test, rules of the road exam and pay a fee.

Rules For Permit Riders

There are rules for the permit period that apply to both age groups. Restrictions for those operating a motorcycle with a permit include riding in the daylight only, and under constant supervision. Night time it is not safe for inexperienced riders on the road. To increase the safety of everyone on the road, it’s required that someone supervises the permit rider.

An experienced rider is someone has had their license for a year or longer and is 21 or older. Just like inexperienced drivers on their permit need an experienced driver in the car, an inexperienced rider needs an experienced rider to assist them.

Follow the rules of the road and satisfy all fees and tests to earn a permit. Completion of the permit process sets you up to earn a license.
