How To Fix Rust Fast And Easy

The most common reason for rust on cars is water exposure. If the rust is treated in its early stages, it should not spread to the car’s frame. However, if rust is not removed, it will continue to spread and get worse over time. Rust can cause car parts to break off, making it a safety hazard for passengers and other drivers on the road.

For minor rust issues, the best and easiest way to get rid of rust is to use a liquid or aerosol rust remover. According to experts at Advance Auto Parts, owners with rust problems should follow the following steps:

  1. Gather the appropriate protective gear to handle chemicals, including protective gloves and a face mask.
  2. Block off the rusted area with masking tape made specifically for cars.
  3. Follow the directions on the rust remover. Spray or brush the chemicals on the rust and let it sit for a few minutes. Wipe off any residue with a clean rag.
  4. Remove any excess rust with sandpaper.
  5. Clean the treated area with grease and wax remover soap and let it dry.
  6. Spray primer in a light-to-medium coat, and allow an hour to dry. Repeat this process a total of three times.
  7. Spray the color base coat. This process may have to be repeated multiple times. Allow plenty of drying time to prevent any drips.
  8. Spray the clear coat. Wait two or 3 days before washing, and wait for at least two months before waxing.

If you have access to a garage, take advantage of it. A garage can help keep a car rust-free longer. You may also earn a discount on a car insurance policy for having garage-kept cars.
