Road signs are an important part of everyday driving. You may know what they mean but do you know what the colors indicate? It’s easy to assume the colors of the road sign is just there to make it stand out but those shades have a deeper meaning than that. Keep reading to learn the colors of American road signs and what they mean.
A white road sign, like the one pictured above, is a regulatory sign. This indicates the limits of what you can and can’t do while on the road. These signs include speed limit signs, or warnings of no U-turns, etc.
If you see a brown road sign, this is identifying a “parks and recreation” area. These include hiking trails, swimming areas, and so on. Make no mistake, these signs do not signify where filming locations for the Amy Poehler series Parks and Recreation can be found.
These fluorescent signs indicate potential foot traffic. These signs are common to find around neighborhoods and schools. So, if you see one of these signs, keep your eyes peeled for nearby pedestrians. Approach these signs with caution, especially if you do not have full visibility of the surrounding area.
A blue sign is considered to be a guide sign. You’d think that all road signs would be considered guide signs but that is not the case. These particular signs point you in the direction of such places as hospitals, rest areas, and gas stations.
Orange signs warn of construction areas and various other reasons for temporary traffic control. Even if you don’t immediately spot the construction area & crew, keep your eyes peeled until you’re sure you’re out of the construction area. Construction areas also typically have their own specific speed limit, so keep an eye out for that sign as well.
Green traffic signs help with directional guidance. They will inform you about things such as mile markers and highway exits. Basically, they tell you how far you are from a given destination.
