Coffee Shops in Back of the Yards

Back of the Yards is a historical neighborhood in Chicago due to it being the former location of the Union Stock Yards –the original gate is still standing in one of the town’s parks. It’s also one of the largest Hispanic communities in the Chicagoland area. With residents coming in and out for work, there have to be some good coffee stops, right?

Back of the Yards Coffee House

Of course, the foremost place for morning joe would be the town’s namesake coffee house. However, it’s not owned by the town but rather locally owned and started by Mayra Herandez. The coffee house’s menu is packed with various ways to serve and drink coffee. Signature drinks include Latin-based recipes and a breakfast menu with bagels and sandwiches. What began as a local way to serve coffee soon grew into a pillar for the community. Several of their proceeds go to local charities at the same time.

Sputnik Coffee Company

Sputnik Coffee has been successful in getting its beans in stores across the Chicagoland area and a little bit in other states of the Midwest. Their central roastery can be visited in Back of the Yards. There is a somewhat minimalist art to their coffee; after all, it began in a living room. They also have a diverse section of loose leaf tea and merchandise.

Dunkin’ Donuts

If you’re in a hurry and need coffee on the fly without experiencing much, then there’s always ol’ reliable Dunkin’. Back of the Yards seems to isolate their chain establishments on Ashland, so they aren’t hard to miss. It’s by the McDonald’s and Domino’s.
