Sometimes, you and an insurance company will not see eye to eye. You may not feel properly compensated for your damages and the insurance company refuses to negotiate further. This can be overwhelming for a person that does not know how to handle disputed claims. 

So, here are a few tips to help handle disputed claims:

Express concern

If you don’t feel the amount offered is right, don’t worry. You’re not obligated to accept the first offer an insurance company makes. Let your claims adjustor know that you do not feel properly compensated. Usually, adjusters have a little bit of leeway. As you would expect, they will start with the lowest possible offer they can make.  Be ready to provide proof like Kelley Blue Book’s suggested value for a car. Medical expenses for a bodily injury would also be sufficient proof. If you still do not feel satisfied after, you may want to file a complaint with the Illinois Department of Insurance.

Hire an appraiser

Insurance adjusters strive to give the most appropriate appraisal. But, at the end of the day, they work on behalf of the insurance company, not you. Hiring an independent appraiser will cost you but it may help settle a disputed claim. An independent evaluation of the case may help strengthen your chances of getting a higher settlement.

Try mediation

An unbiased third party could help you and the insurance company reach a mutual agreement. Both sides will express their concerns and must follow the ruling of the arbitrator.

Go to small claims courts

If mediation is not for you, you may try to resolve disputes in small claims court. If you decide to pursue this route, it may be best to hire an attorney. Moreover, one that specializes in insurance claims.
