The good news is that SR‑22 coverage is highly affordable, ranging from low cost to no cost at all. However, needing SR‑22 car insurance may have a negative impact on the overall cost to insure your vehicle.
Will it Increase My Premiums?
If an SR-22 requirement is ordered by the court, it can increase your auto insurance premiums.
The extent to which having an SR‑22 will increase your insurance premiums will largely be dependent on major traffic violation, along with your type of vehicle, insurance history, location, driving record, and other factors.
High-risk drivers with a driving under the influence conviction can see their auto insurance rates rise by as much as 375% in North Carolina. 50 - 100% is the range of premium increase nationally.
When the SR‑22 requirement is removed, insurance premiums may decrease when you have a clean driving record.
Types of SR-22 Insurance Certificates
How Long Does the Financial Responsibility Requirement Last?
On average, most states require drivers to maintain SR‑22 insurance for at least three years.
However, the time period that your state will require you to have an SR‑22 will depend on both the laws of your jurisdiction as well as the type and severity of your traffic violation that resulted in the license suspension or revocation.
Similar to car insurance, an SR‑22 insurance certificate must be renewed annually. If your SR‑22 insurance lapses or is canceled for any reason, the requirement will extend and you may face additional penalties.
What Happens If My Policy Lapses?
Failure to renew your policy prior to its expiration date is called a lapse in coverage. This is most commonly due to a failure to make payments. In such cases, your insurance company is required by law to notify your state’s DMV.
As a consequence, your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles generally revokes or suspends your driver’s license, in addition to imposing other potential state-specific filing fees or penalties.
