What is SR22 Insurance?
SR-22 is not a type of insurance, rather a proof of insurance. An SR-22 certificate of financial responsibility guarantees you carry the minimum insurance coverage required by the State of Illinois. It also guarantees that you will continue to carry it for a set amount of time.
The Secretary of State requires drivers in Illinois to carry a certificate of financial responsibility if they have safety responsibility suspensions, unsatisfied judgment and suspensions. It’s also required for drivers with revocations and mandatory insurance supervisions. As well as individuals who receive three or more convictions for mandatory insurance violations.
Per Illinois law, drivers that need an SR22 certificate must have the following minimum amounts in vehicle liability insurance:
- $25,000 for injury or death of one person in an accident
- $50,000 for injury or death of more than one person in an accident
- $25,000 for damages to property of another person
There most common reasons financial responsibility certificates are filed are:
- DUI/DWI convictions
- Driving without insurance
- Driving without a license
- A revoked or suspended license
