10 U.S. Road Signs You May Not Be Familiar With
There are so many U.S. road signs to be aware of that it’s easy to forget the meaning behind one or two. Sometimes, a road sign will be accompanied by a brief written description of what it means, but not always. That’s why we’ve decided to put together this guide to a few that you may not be familiar with.
1. Hospital Sign
If you’re in need of a hospital, these signs will guide you in the right direction. Sometimes emergencies happen on the road and you may not always have your GPS or cellphone at hand.
2. Hill Ahead
When taking your car down a hill, you should always take precautions to ensure the safety of you and your vehicle. These signs are a good way to be prepared for a steep decline in the road. This is especially helpful at night, where those dips in the road can come out of seemingly nowhere.
3. Laundry Facility Ahead
Are you on the road and need a place to clean your clothes? Seeing this sign is a warning that you’re in luck. It sounds odd but there are numerous reasons to have this issue, such as if you’re on a long road trip.
4. No Parking
This one is pretty self-explanatory but if you don’t know the specific meaning behind, it could be confusing. Whenever you see this sign, it’s an indicator that you’ll have to find somewhere else to park.
5. Railroad Crossing Ahead
Railroad crossings are not fun to pass by, so it’s always good to be aware when there’s one coming up. That’s what this sign above does, warns drivers so they can be prepared to either slow down over the tracks or wait for the train to pass. If possible, you can also use this sign as a way of seeking another route to your destination.
6. Left Turn Ahead
This sign may seem peculiar but the meaning behind it is very simple. A sign like this with the arrow pointing to the left is warning drivers that a left turn is coming, so be prepared for drivers slowing down for the turn lane. Signs like this do also exist for right turns, so be sure to note the direction of the arrow when passing by.
7. Merging Lanes
It’s incredibly easy for a lane merge to come out of nowhere if you’re not aware of the proper sign to look for. To avoid any sudden stress by cars hopping into your lane, keep an eye out for these signs. This particular sign pictured above is signaling that traffic is merging from the right.
8. Mile Marker
You’ve probably seen these signs a lot but may not know its true purpose. When you’re driving on the highway, a mile marker is a helpful way of locating the exit you’re looking for. Exits are usually numbered by the mile number. That way, you can figure out where you’re going without having to look down at your GPS or phone.
9. Slippery When Wet
It’s incredibly important to be able to recognize this sign. It lets you know that–whether it be due to rain, ice or snow–the road up ahead is prone to becoming slippery. So, either drive very cautiously or try to seek an alternate route.
10. Hiking Trail Ahead
If you see one of these signs with the delightful duo waving and using a walking staff, it’s not a sign for a Lord of the Rings convention. It’s a warning that there may be some folks out for a hike crossing the road ahead, so be sure to keep an eye out for anyone.
