Des Plaines, French from "of the plains" and is named after the Des Plaines River which runs through the city. It is a small Chicago suburban community near O'Hare International Airport. Des Plaines is also called "City of Destiny." The city had a total population of 58,720 as of the 2000 census. In 1925 the voters incorporated into a city after annexing Village of Riverview to the south, and the city grew further after the annexation of Orchard Place area in 1956.
