Workers Compensation & Occupational Accidents
|
Workers Compensation/ Occupational Accidents If you employ drivers and other workers, a Workers' Compensation policy is required by most states. This insurance protects you against your liability to your workers for injuries sustained while on the job. Workers Compensation can be expensive for trucking businesses.
Occupational Accident insurance is designed specifically for the trucking industry. This coverage typically provides medical payments and disability payments due to on-the-job injuries. Most plans will also include a small amount for off-the-job accidental injuries as well.
There are differences between workers compensation and occupational accident policies. Generally speaking, in the event of work-related accident, there is no limit on the period for which workers comp policies pay until workers is able to return to work (could be 10 months or 10 years). The better Occupational Accident policies will pay medical benefits for up to 2 years from date of covered injury subject to the policy limits. The benefits paid to survivors under Workers' Compensation are also more extensive in most states when compared to Occupational Accident.
Price is a major difference. Occupational Accident policies are much cheaper, and can be purchased for about $170 a month depending on the class of business and the level of benefits you are willing to pay for. The cost of Workers Comp is a percentage of your annual wages (22% plus or minus). Many insurance companies has minimum premiums for their Workers Comp policies
