Most insurance experts agree that ZIP codes, age, gender, and marital status of the auto insurance applicants have important effect on the auto insurance rates. When combined, gender and age become critically important for younger people under age 25 years. For example, males age 16 pay little less than double what females of the same age pay for liability auto insurance in Chicago Illinois.

Insurance experts attribute the elevated auto insurance rates for males to more risky driving behavior which is justified by higher percentage of auto crashes for males over females in that age brackets.  Experts believe that this trend is diminishing as more females in that age brackets are exhibiting high risk driving patterns. very close to their male counterparts. The gap between the rates for these two sets of drivers is diminishing.

Text messaging while driving is a new phenomenon which emerged in the past two decades. More studies are revealing that texting while driving is dangerous, and it increases the chances of serious and fatal crashes. According to texting-while-driving.org studies reveal that texting while driving is causing crashes twice as much as drunken driving.

However, initial statistics showed that more younger females are using text messaging than their male counterpart, an argument that was in favor of raising premiums for younger females. According to msnbc.com 72% of adult americans are texting while driving in 2010. Another 2008 survey by the Nationwide Insurance, women cell phone owners were more likely than male cell phone owners to use their cell phone while driving at a rate of 85% versus 78% for men and women, respectively.

Gender and Texting While Driving

More recent studies (Madden and Rainie, 2010, others) revealed that young men and women use text at different rates, but rates of texting while driving are equal among both genders. The continuous studies continue to show that texting while driving is a dangerous habit that is shared equally among different age brackets with little or no significance attributed to gender.

Illinois Prohibit Cell Phone Use While Driving

Texting while driving continues to be a challenge to the auto insurance business, but it will not be a major factor playing against certain age, gender, or marital status.  The State of Illinois is one of the states that have made it illegal to use the cell phone or text while driving.
